The Individual Learning Space
Physical Environment
Each person's individual learning space is unique. Prior to this unit, I made an incorrect assumption that my ideal learning space was quiet and isolated. However, I have come to realise that this is only true some of the time. Most of my learning occurs when I have some distraction around me. The television, music or some kind of external distraction seems to strangely, help me focus. Whereas in complete silence, I procrastinate and find little time for effective thinking. When learning or working under pressure however, I prefer learning spaces that are organised and quiet.
This individual learning space is where I can relax and learn at my own pace. The couch is relatively comfortable and I can put my legs up of the table while listening to the television. Most of my reading and thinking about journals and research articles happens here.
This learning space helps me organise my notes, books and other materials. The desk helps me keep organised and learn when under pressure. However, being in the lounge room it can be difficult to use if my housemates are using the space.

This learning space helps release my creative thinking. Looking outside gives me a different perspective on things and can help me reflect on my learning.

My bedroom is a commonly used learning space for reading and listening. The physical environment is very comfortable which helps me relax and tune-in to learning.
Curriculum and PedagogyThe Australian Curriculum (2013) states that students must:
The individual learning space can help flourish these important qualities. It is important that teachers keep the individual learning space in mind in their teaching and pedagogy. |
Students and TeachersIndividual learning spaces give students a different and comfortable environment to learn. They are usually places where students can create, evaluate, analyse, apply, understand, remember and meet Bloom's Taxonomy to the best of their ability. Teachers should encourage their students to learn in spaces outside their classroom. They should also be encouraged to make time for themselves in their individual learning space.
